George III Large Silver Cream Jug, London, 1810
This is a top quality, large and very heavy George III Sterling Silver Cream Jug of classic bulbous form and standing on four ball feet. The jug has the initials CM elegantly engraved on one side of the body beneath a crest of a mermaid holding an olive branch, which sadly we have been unable to identify.
The cream jug is made in London by the partnership of Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard and dates to 1810. Rebecca Emes was the widow and former partner of John Emes and the Emes / Barnard partnership was a twenty year stretch of probably the oldest continually operating silversmiths in the world with a history stretching back to 1680.
Condition is very good with just one ball foot slightly turned in plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 13.5cm / 5.3ins from lip to handle, 7.7cm / 3ins across and stands 9.4cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 183.1g / 6.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the body below the lip, are slightly rubbed but still very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter P for 1810, the George III duty mark and the RE over EB makers' mark for Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
