George V Silver Cream Jug, J Aitkin & Son, 1916
This is a very stylish George V Sterling Silver Cream Jug. Despite its unusual, very modern looking design it actually dates to the middle of the First World War and is a transitional piece between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The low jug is saucer shaped with a broad pouring lip and stands on a square frame base. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug was made in Birmingham by J. Aitkin & Son and dates to 1916. J. Aitkin & Son was established by John Aitkin in the late 19th century at premises in Spencer Street in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter. They initially specialised in silver jewellery, particularly brooches for women and cuff links for men, and small silver items such as trinket dishes, jewllery boxes and photo frames. They went on to create some stylish silver tableware, to work in gold and later produced some very fine enamel jewellery.
Condition is very good, with just a small shallow bruise on the lower part of the body on either side below the central rim and a truly tiny crease on the upper part near the handle plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 105 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 12.7cm / 5ins from lip to handle, 8.7cm / 3.4ins across the body and stands 5.2cm / 2ins high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a very respectable 85.6g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the lower part of the body, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter r for 1916 and the J A & S makers' mark for J. Aitkin & Son.
