Edwardian Silver Hot Water Jug, C.S. Harris, 1903
Here we have an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Hot Water Jug in the Georgian Revival style. The jug has a circular base with reed and scroll decoration, a pear shaped body, a serpentine cane wrapped handle and an acanthus decorated finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The hot water jug was made in London by renowned silversmiths C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd and dates to 1903. Charles Stuart Harris was the son and grandson of silversmiths and founded his own firm in 1852, probably taking over his father’s business. He established a reputation for top quality workmanship and supplied silverware to many high end stores as well as selling under his own name. The firm operated from a number of premises in Hatton Garden and Clerkenwell and in 1897 became C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd. In the early 1930s they were absorbed into Israel Freeman & Sons Ltd.
Condition is very good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The hot water jug stands 16.5cm / 6.5ins high, is 11.5cm / 4.5ins from lip to handle and 7.7cm / 3ins across at its widest point. It weighs in at a very substantial 287.4g / 10.1oz of Sterling Silver with just a tiny amount of that being contributed by the cane wrapping on the handle.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body and the inside rim of the lid, are a little rubbed but still easy to make out. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1903 and the distinctive trefoil C S H makers' mark for C.S. Harris & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the hot water jug.
