George III Irish Silver Table Spoon, Dublin, 1776
This is a fine quality George III Irish Bright Cut Sterling Silver Table Spoon in the Celtic Point pattern. The spoon is bright cut engraved in the Star pattern, typical of Dublin, and has a blank cartouche.
The spoon was made in Dublin by silversmith William Ward and dates to 1776. William Ward was an Irish specialist spoon maker who was active first at Great Ship Street and later Fleet Street, both in Dublin, from around 1770 until about 1810. His flatware is always good quality.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 245 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The table spoon is 22cm / 8.7ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 62.5g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, at the bottom of the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the, quite rubbed, Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter D for 1776 and the distinctive W W in a crimped box makers' mark for William Ward.
