George II Silver Waiter, R. Abercromby, 1745
Here we have a superb quality George II Sterling Silver Waiter or Small Salver. The salver stands on three hoof feet and has a scalloped rim with shell motifs. The centre of the waiter is engraved with a crest of a lion's head, which in 1745 was the device of Alexander Ogilvy, the 6th Lord Banff in Scotland.
The waiter was made in London by silversmith Robert Abercromby (sometimes spelled Abercrombie) and dates to 1745, the year of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite Rebellion. Robert Abercromby had a very brief partnership with George Hindmarsh for a few months in 1731 before both men set up on their own. Abercromby was a specialist salver maker whose mark is only seen on salvers and waiters and he produced some of the very best examples. He remained in business into the late 1740s.
Condition is extremely good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 280 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The waiter is 19.2cm / 7.5ins in diameter and stands 2.9cm / 1.1ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 314.9g / 11.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the waiter, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter k for 1745 and the distinctive R A makers' mark for Robert Abercromby.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the waiter.
