Art Nouveau Silver Dressing Table Tray, 1910
Here we have a stunning Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Dressing Table Tray. The tray is quatrefoil shaped with an embossed swirling design of flowers and foliage within an interwoven border. There is a blank central cartouche making this ideal as a gift.
Dressing table trays were designed to sit on top of a lady's dressing table and hold the perfume bottles, pots and jars, trinket dishes and jewellery boxes so that they didn't scratch or stain the surface of the dressing table.
This tray was made in Birmingham by silversmith William Aitken and dates to 1910, the height of the Art Nouveau era. William Aitken founded his firm in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter in the late 1880s. He produced a wide range of silverware for both domestic and personal use and had pieces assayed in both Birmingham and Chester. He remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or splits and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tray is 30.6cm / 12ins by 22.8cm / 9ins and weighs in at a very substantial 235.7g / 8.31oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the top left of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the W.A in an oval makers' mark for William Aitken.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dressing table tray.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
