Edwardian Silver Pepper Grinder, London, 1901

1 of 6
Here we have a handsome Edwardian Sterling Silver Pepper Grinder of a good size. The grinder is urn shaped with a spreading circular foot and a central rib around the body. The lid is stepped with a milled edge. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper grinder was made in London by high end silversmiths Wakely & Wheeler and dates to 1901. The grinder mechanism is made by Peugeot Freres of France, who are generally considered to have made the finest grinders available. Wakely & Wheeler traced its history back to silversmith John Lias in 1791. He was joined by his two sons Henry & Charles and later Henry's son Henry Jnr joined the partnership. In 1878 James Wakely joined Henry Lias Jnr and after Henry's retirement he was replaced by Frank Wheeler to form Wakely & Wheeler. They remained in business up until 1957.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. The grinding mechanism is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper grinder stands 8.7cm / 3.4ins high and is 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter. It weighs in at a substantial 195.1g / 6.9oz but this does of course include the steel mechanism.
The hallmarks on the outside of the body are quite rubbed but those on the inside of the lid are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1901 and the J.W over F.C.W makers' mark for James Wakeley and Frank Wheeler of Wakely & Wheeler.
Shipping in the UK is £12.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the pepper grinder.
