George V Silver Pepper Shaker, Mappin & Webb 1912

This is a handsome George V Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The large size shaker has an oblong base with rounded corners, the body has reeded decoration leading to an hourglass neck. The lid has a gadrooned rim, a reeded domed top and a flame finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper shaker was made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1912. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shaker is 9.2cm / 3.6ins high, 5.1cm / 2ins wide and 4.4cm / 1.7ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 46.9g / 1.65oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the front of the body, are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the distinctive Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. The underside of the base also has the MAPPIN & WEBB retail stamp.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
