George VI Silver Toast Rack, Roberts & Doré, 1938
This is a good looking George VI Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Rack from the 1930s. The toast rack has an oblong base standing on four bracket feet. The dividers are rounded arches and there is a square finger ring handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made in Birmingham by Roberts & Doré and dates to 1938. Founded by Tom Roberts and James Doré in 1908, the firm has a showroom in London’s prestigious Hatton Garden district and manufacturing in Birmingham and Sheffield. Their mark is found on a wide range of Sterling Silver and silver plated goods of consistently high quality. They remain a family run business under the Roberts family today.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 7.1cm / 2.8ins by 5.6cm / 2.2ins and stands 9.1cm / 3.6ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 69.1g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the toast rack, are nice and clear to read with just a little rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter O for 1938 and the R & D makers' mark for Roberts & Doré.
