George III Silver Table Salt, D & R Hennell, 1766

Here we have a superb early George III Sterling Silver Table Salt with Gilt Interior. The salt is oval with wrythen decoration around the bowl and stands on four feathered hoof feet. The front of the salt is engraved with a crest of an armoured arm holding a rough club, which is the mark of the Coggins family, an old English surname that was later often shortened to Cox.
The salt was made in London by David Hennell (I) & Robert Hennell (I) and dates to 1766. The renowned Hennell family firm of silversmiths was established by David Hennell (I) in London in 1736 with his son Robert Hennell (I) joining in 1763. Several further generations including a second David and three more Roberts continued the business until it was finally sold to Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1887.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the base of the bowl, no significant loss to the gilding, no salt corrosion and only the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 250 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is of large size being 8.3cm / 3.25ins long, 6.5cm / 2.5ins wide and standing 5.1cm / 2ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 135.3g / 4.77oz / 4.35toz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head for London, the Gothic date letter L for 1766 and the D H R H makers' mark for David Hennell (I) & Robert Hennell (I).
Shipping in the UK is £13.00 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the table salt.
