Edwardian Silver Candlestick, John Millward Banks
This is an elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Candlestick of round pillar form. It has a stepped base with ring decoration at the top and bottom of the stem which opens out to the sconce. The base is weighted for stability.
The candlestick is made by John Millward Banks and assayed in Chester around 1902. John Banks established his business in Birmingham in 1863, but like many Birmingham silversmiths he had much of his work assayed in Chester, which was a less busy assay office than the one in Birmingham. Banks died in 1911 and his son continued the business up until 1926. Although John Millward Banks made a wide variety of pieces, his mark is very rarely seen on candlesticks.
The candlestick has seen some use and there a few small dings on the stem and the underside of the sconce but it remains an attractive piece that would suit either a modern or period home. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The candlestick stands 16.2cm / 6.4" high and is 9.4cm / 3.7" in diameter across the base. It weighs 185.9g / 6.5oz but this includes the weighting material in the base.
The hallmarks on the base are clear to read with the exception of the date letter which is quite rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester and the J.M.B makers' mark for John Millward Banks, which was in use between 1898 and 1907. The date letter is most probably the "B" for 1902.
