Edwardian Scent Bottle with Silver Cap, Chester 1905
This is a beautiful Edwardian Cut Glass Scent Bottle with a Sterling Silver screw on cap. The glass is very deep cut with a large starburst on both front and back and line and notch cuts down the sides. The cap has a pretty sequence of spirals and dots circling the central cartouche which is blank. There is a cork inset within the cap to form a good seal with the top of the bottle.
The cap is hallmarked for Chester, 1905 by the silversmiths J & R Griffin. Founded by brothers Joseph & Richard Griffin in Birmingham in 1895, the firm had the vast majority of its work assayed in Chester rather than Birmingham. Always one of the smaller assay offices, Chester was less busy than the Birmingham office and possibly charged a little less too. The Chester office closed in 1962 and Chester marked silver is now much sought after by collectors.
Condition of the bottle is very good, with no chips or cracks and just a slight fogging to the inside of the glass, which disappears when it has liquid in it. The silver top is a little dented in places but screws on securely and still looks attractive. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle stands 7.8cm / 3.1ins high and is 4.4cm / 1.7ins across at its widest point. All together it weighs 132.5g / 4.7oz.
The hallmarks on the cap are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword & three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter F for 1905 and the J & R G makers' mark for J & R Griffin.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
