George V Dressing Table Pot, H. Matthews, 1911
This is an attractive George V Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass pot is hobnail cut around the body and star cut on the base. The domed silver lid has an embossed scrollwork design and is gilded on the interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The dressing table pot was made in Birmingham by noted silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1911, the first full year of George V's reign. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a couple of small dings in the silver lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot stands 6.4cm / 2.5ins high and is 5cm / 1.97ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs in at 10.0g / 0.35oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 87.8g / 3.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1911 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
