Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Salver, Chester 1922
A beautiful Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Salver from the early 1920s. This oval salver has a sinuous Art Nouveau rim with an organic feel to it, typical of the Nouveau style.
The salver is made by J & R Griffin Ltd and hallmarked in Chester in 1922. It's not so common to find large silver pieces with a Chester hallmark as the bulk of their assay work was antique jewellery and smaller silver pieces. Joseph & Richard Griffin founded their company in the mid-1890s and despite having virtually all their items hallmarked in Chester they were based in Birmingham's famous jewellery quarter. The company ceased trading in 1926.
The salver is in very good condition with just a couple of truly tiny dings to the tray base and the superficial surface scratching you will always find on trays and salvers. It would be ideal for serving drinks or canapes and is also a wonderfully decorative item in its own right. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tray is 32.4cm / 12.7" long, 21.3cm / 8.4" wide and stands 1.7cm / 0.6" high. It weighs a very substantial 322g / 11.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the surface of the tray are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter "W" for 1922 and the J & R G Ld makers' mark for J & R Griffin Ltd.
