Art Deco Silver Cigarette Box, London, 1931
Here we have a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Box. The box is oblong with engine turned decoration on the lid surrounding a rectangular blank cartouche. The interior is cedar wood lined to keep the tobacco fresh and the underside has a black leather lining.
The cigarette box was made in London by silversmiths Collett & Anderson and dates to 1931. Founded in the early 1920s, Collett & Anderson were based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter but had virtually all of their pieces assayed in London. They principally made dressing table items but their mark is also seen on photo frames, smoking accessories and occasionally tableware. The firm ceased trading around the start of the Second World War in 1939.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings on the left hand edge of the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The hinge is in good working order and the box shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette box is 11.5cm / 4.5ins by 9cm / 3.5ins and stands 3.9cm / 1.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 294.7g / 10.4oz but this does of course include the cedar wood lining.
The hallmarks, on the left hand side of the body and lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter q for 1931 and the C & A makers' mark for Collett & Anderson.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
