2 x Mid-Century Silver Candlesticks, B'ham,1966
Here we have a superb quality Pair of Mid-Century Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks are in the Georgian style having octagonal bases with curved corners, which are weighted for stability. The octagonal stems are knopped and topped by urn shaped sconces with removable drip trays.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by the Barker-Ellis Silverware Company and date to 1966. Founded in 1801 by Mary Barker, the firm became Barker Brothers in 1886 when Mary's grandsons were in control. They were based in Birmingham but also had pieces assayed in Chester and London. They were very successful silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in business up until 1992, latterly under the name Barker-Ellis Silverware.
Condition is extremely good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
These are well made candlesticks in a good gauge of silver. They stand 20cm / 7.9ins high and are 11cm / 4.3ins across the bases. The pair together weigh in at 1.06kg / 37.4oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the sides of the bases, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter R for 1966 and the B E S Co in a shield makers' mark for Barker-Ellis Silverware Company.
Shipping in the UK is £14 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
