Here we have a handsome Pair of George V Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks have circular line decorated bases, weighted for stability, outward tapering stems leading to line decorated knops and urn shaped sconces with line decorated rims.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by silversmith William Henry Leather and date to 1924. William Henry Leather established his firm in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in the early 1890s and registered marks at the Birmingham and Chester assay offices. The company made a broad range of silverware from small brooches up to full size teapots but are probably best known for their tableware and flatware. They ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is very good, with just a few truly tiny dings around the rims of the bases and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick stands 15.5cm / 6.1ins high and is 7.8cm / 3.1ins in diameter across the base. The pair together weigh in at 404g / 14.25oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1924 and the W.H.L makers' mark for William Henry Leather.
Shipping in the UK is £13.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
