2 x Edwardian Silver Candlesticks, H Matthews 1908
Here we have a fine quality pair of decorative Edwardian Sterling Silver Candlesticks, The candlesticks have square bases with gadrooned rims and swag decoration. The tapered square stems have bow and harebell decoration and the round sconces are urn shaped. The bases are weighted for stability and have a green baize covering to avoid scratching.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by Henry Matthews and date to 1908. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.
The candlesticks have certainly seen some use but overall condition is good. There are a few minor dings around the rims of the bases. One candlestick has a few slightly larger dents on the one edge of the stem and the other has a seam on the top of the stem below the sconce that has opened just a little. They remain perfectly usable and look very striking. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 14.7cm / 5.8ins high with a 7.7cm / 3ins square base. The pair together weigh in at 465.4g / 16.4oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
