2 x Art Deco Silver Napkin Rings, J. Gloster, 1937
Here we have a very stylish cased pair of Art Deco Sterling Silver Napkin Rings. The rings are D-shaped with engine turned decoration all around the outside surrounding a circular blank cartouche. They are in their original fitted case which has a black velvet tray holding the rings and a cream satin lining in the lid.
The napkin rings were made by silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd in Birmingham and date to 1937. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The box is in generally good condition apart from a small piece of the covering which has been torn and then glued back into place at some point in its life. The clasp and hinges are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each napkin ring is 4.7cm / 1.8ins across, 3.9cm / 1.5ins high and 2.6cm / 1in deep. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 57.2g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the flat side of each ring, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the distinctive J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special DElivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
