William IV Cut Glass Jar with Silver Gilt Lid, 1836
This is a beautiful William IV Cut Glass Jar with a Sterling Silver Gilt Lid. The jar has deep checker cut hobnail decoration all around the body and continuing across the base. The silver gilt lid has ribbed sides with an engine turned top and the initials C.H engraved in Old English Gothic lettering in the central cartouche.
This jar was almost certainly originally intended to grace a lady's dressing table but it could be used for storing anything you liked today.
The lid is hallmarked for London, 1836 with the makers' mark of T.D. This London makers' mark only occurs in the 1830s and is primarily found on jar lids and scent bottle tops. We have been unable to specifically identify the silversmith it belongs to.
Condition is extremely good with no chips or cracks in the glass and no dings or dents in the silver gilt lid. There is a little rubbing to the gilding on the raised ribs around the lid but the rest of it is in excellent condition. Overall it has survived remarkably well for over 185 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jar stands 8.7cm / 3.4ins high and is 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter. The silver gilt lid by itself weighs a respectable 31.2g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in the jar weighs 194.6g / 6.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the lid, are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter A for 1836, the William IV duty mark and the T.D makers' mark for the mysterious silversmith.
