Victorian Wolfsky Dressing Table Jar with Silver Lid
This is a smart Victorian Glass Dressing Table Jar with a Sterling Silver lid. The jar is oval in shape with high slice cut sides. The silver lid has ribbed sides and a smooth top with an elegantly engraved monogram of the letters M C or M G.
The jar is made in London by the renowned firm Wolfsky & Co and dates to 1886. Wolfsky & Co was founded by Moritz Wolfsky in the late 1860s. They specialised in luggage and fitted travelling cases and the contents of fitted vanity cases for both men and women. The firm was based in the City of London and later also had a showroom in London's West End. They remained in business into the 1930s.
Condition is generally good with just a couple of tiny nicks on the rim of the glass and a few small dings in the silver plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The oval jar is 6.8cm / 2.7ins by 4.3cm / 1.7ins and stands 8.4cm / 3.3ins high. The lid by itself weighs a respectable 15.0g / 0.53oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the jar weighs in at 196.7g / 6.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the silver lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter L for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the M.W makers' mark for Moritz Wolfsky of Wolfsky & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
