Victorian Silver Vesta Case, Mappin & Webb, 1887

This is a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is a plain oval with a hinged lid and a gilt interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The vesta case was made in London by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1887. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 135 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the lid shuts smoothly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 5.7cm / 2.2ins long from ring to strike and 2.6cm / 1in wide. It weighs in at a respectable 14.2g / 0.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body and a partial set on the outside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter M for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.N.M makers' mark for John Newton Mappin, the founder of Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
