Art Deco Silver Cigarette / Matchbook Case, 1934

Here we have a very stylish and unusual Art Deco Sterling Silver Combined Cigarette Case and Matchbook Holder. The rectangular case is engine turned to front and back with an Odeon style blank cartouche on the front. The interior is glded.
The case was made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1934, the height of the Art Deco era. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The hinge and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case is 13.8cm / 5.4ins long, 5.2cm / 2ins wide and 0.7cm / 0.27ins deep. It weighs in at substantial 119.9g / 4.23oz / 3.85ozt of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter K for 1934 and the distinctive J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd. In addition there is a registered design number of 796356 which also dates the original design to 1934.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
