Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, S. Blanckensee, 1908

This is an attractive Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is roughly square with scroll engraving to front and back and a blank circular cartouche on the front. The back of the case is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket and the interior is gilded.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham by S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd and dates to 1908. The firm was originally founded in Bristol by Abraham Solomon Blanckensee in 1826 but very quickly moved to premises in Birmingham and also had a mark registered in Chester. Saul Samuel was briefly a partner but left in 1858 and from the 1880s they were known as S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd until they ceased trading at the end of the 1930s. They made a wide range of silverware of consistently high quality.
Condition is good, with just a couple of small dings in the lid and a tiny split on the top at one end of the lid. The hinge is in good working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta measures 4.2cm / 1.6ins by 3.9cm / 1.5ins and is 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at 23.1g / 0.81oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter II for 1908 and the S.B & S.Ld makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd.
