Victorian Silver Vesta Case, Constantine & Floyd
This is an attractive, good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta case is oblong with rounded corners, a gilt interior and the strike along the underside. The design is split diagonally with a plain lower half and engraved leaf decoration on the upper half. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The vesta case was made by silversmiths Constantine and Floyd and assayed in Chester in 1898. Alfred Constantine and William Henry Floyd registered their mark in Birmingham in 1880 and later registered marks in both Chester and London. They were jewellers and silversmiths and produced many small items of silverware, primarily for personal use. They became a limited company in 1900 and opened a showroom in London’s prestigious Hatton Garden district. The firm was bought by Henry Williamson in 1931.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 125 years of use and some rubbing to the gilt interior. The hinge is in good working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 4.9cm / 1.9ins by 3.5cm / 1.4ins and weighs in at 28.2g / 0.99oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter P for 1898 and the Ce & Fd makers' mark for Constantine & Floyd.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Cass Signed For Parcel Post.
