Here we have an exquisite late Victorian Sterling Silver Snuff Box with a Gilt Interior. The box is oblong and curved to fit comfortably into a pocket. The body is decorated all over with scrolling acanthus leaves. There is a hinged lid in the centre with a broad blank cartouche.

The snuff box was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticpate after over 125 years of good service. The hinged lid works smoothly and shuts securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The snuff box is 6.8cm / 2.7ins long, 3.5cm / 1.4ins wide and 1.3cm / 0.51ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 30.7g /1.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the box, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the distinctive CS and FS either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd of Saunders & Shepherd.
