Edwardian Silver & Enamel Belt Buckle, 1910
This is a beautiful Edwardian Sterling Silver and Enamel Belt Buckle. The buckle is oval with a two prong fastening. The front of the buckle is decorated with guilloche enamel featuring a band of lilac enamel on a laurel wreath underlay with white enamel borders to the inside and outside.
The buckle was made in Birmingham by J. Aitkin & Son and dates to 1910. J. Aitkin & Son was established by John Aitkin in the late 19th century at premises in Spencer Street in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. They initially specialised in silver jewellery, particularly brooches for women and cuff links for men, and small silver items such as trinket dishes and photo frames. They went on to work in gold and also produced some very fine enamel jewellery and accessories.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the enamel and just the lightest superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The buckle measures 5.7cm / 2.2ins by 4.9cm / 1.9ins and weighs in at 19.7g / 0.69oz.
The hallmarks, on the back of the buckle, are nice and clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the J A & S makers' mark for J. Aitkin & Son.
