Victorian Silver Sauce Bottle Holder, B'ham, 1899
Here we have a decorative late Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Bottle Holder. The holder is shaped as a cylinder which tapers slightly from top to bottom. The body is made up of an intricate pierced flowers and foliage design surrounding a cartouche bearing a monogram of the letters F and S.
The bottle holder is made in Birmingham by silversmith A.W. Pennington and dates to 1899. Arthur Willmore Pennington founded his firm in the late 1880s in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter and remained in business into at least the early 1920s. He produced a range of silverware for both table and personal use of consistently good quality.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced bodywork and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bottle holder stands 10.2cm / 4ins high and is 5.7cm / 2.2ins in diameter at the top tapering to 4.7cm / 1.8ins in diameter at the bottom. It weighs a very respectable 45.4g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the upper rim of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1899 and the A.W.P makers' mark for Arthur Willmore Pennington.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
