Victorian Silver Mustard Pot, 57th W. Middx Rgmnt
Here we have a top quality large Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot in the form of a barrel with its original Blue Glass Liner. The front of the barrel bears the crest, quite rubbed, of the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot and this pot was probably in use in the officer's mess of the regiment.
The regiment was raised in 1755 and saw service in the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War and the Anglo-Zulu War amongst others. They were nicknamed The Die Hards after their heroic contribution to the Battle of Albu(h)era in 1811 and ALBUHERA forms the bottom of their crest. In 1881 the regiment was merged with the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot to form the Middlesex Regiment, who retained the Die Hards nickname.
This mustard was made in London in 1881 by silversmith John Wilmin Figg. Interestingly, this is the year the regiment was merged into the Middlesex Regiment, so it may be that some officers of the 57th ordered this piece to retain an element of their former identity within the new regimental setup.
Condition is very good with just some very tiny dings in the body and the superficial surface wear that is inevitable after over 140 years of use. There are no chips or cracks in the glass liner. As you would expect from a military piece, this has been vigorously polished down the years and the crest has become faded, however the 57, the crown, the garter motto and the word ALBUHERA can still be made out. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 9cm / 3.5ins from rim to handle, 6cm / 2.3ins across and 7.3cm / 2.9ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very substantial 124.5g / 4.4oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 199.1g / 7oz.
The hallmarks on the body are virtually polished away and only a ghost remains. Those inside the lid show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter F for 1881 and the I F makers' mark for John Wilmin Figg, who was active from 1834 until his death in 1886.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
