Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, Hayne & Cater, 1855 Victorian Silver Salt Spoon %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a fine quality, heavy Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the Fiddle and Thread pattern. The spoon is double struck, ie the thread pattern is on both the upper and under sides of the spoon, always a sign of good quality. A crest featuring a hand with an outstretched forefinger pointing up to a motto, sadly now rubbed away, is elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The salt spoon is made in London by well known Victorian silversmiths Hayne & Cater and dates to 1855. In 1848, Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater became controlling partners in a family silversmith business that dated back to Thomas Wallis in around 1758. Dudley Cater retired in 1864 leaving Samuel Hayne in sole charge and the firm ceased trading in 1865.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 165 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.8cm / 4.2ins long and weighs a very respectable 24.3g / 0.86oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter U for 1855, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the S H over D C makers' mark for Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater.
