6 x Mid-Century Silver Coffee Spoons, B'ham, 1958
This is a smart cased set of six Mid-Century Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons. The spoons are in the Puritan style, copying those made in the 17th century during the Commonwealth period. The plain and practical style was as appropriate for the 1950s as it had been in the 1650s. They come in their original black leather covered box with gold tooling. The spoons are set in a black velvet tray and there is an ivory satin lining in the lid.
The spoons were made in Birmingham by William Suckling Ltd and date to 1958. William Suckling founded his company in Birmingham in around 1895. They initially produced electroplated wares but in 1922 the firm registered their first mark at the Birmingham assay office to produce Sterling Silver items alongside their electroplate manufacturing. They produced a wide range of silverware for the table and general domestic use before they finally ceased trading in 1965.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the barest minimum of superficial surface wear, suggesting that these haven't seen a great deal of use despite being 65 years old. The box is also in very nice condition with both the clasps and hinges in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 8cm / 3.1ins long and the set of six together, unboxed, weighs in at 40.4g / 1.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter J for 1958 and the S Ld in conjoined circles makers' mark for William Suckling Ltd.
