Victorian Silver Napkin Ring, Exeter, 1871

This is an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The circular ring has beaded rims to top and bottom and two narrow bands of zigzag engraving around the body. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The napkin ring was made in Exeter by silversmith Thomas Hart Stone and dates to 1871. John Stone was one of Exeter's foremost silversmiths. He was a specialist spoon maker working from premises initially in New Bridge Street and later the High Street between the early 1820s and his death in 1868. He was succeeded in the business by his son Thomas Hart Stone who registered his own mark in 1863 and, after his death in 1873, was in turn followed by his widow Frances Stone.
Condition is very good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 150 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The napkin ring is 4.6cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2cm / 0.79ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 17.7g / 0.62oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, across the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter P for 1871, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the T S makers' mark for Thomas Hart Stone.
