Victorian Silver Matchbox Holder, G. Unite, 1898

1 of 6
This is a handsome large late Victorian Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder. The holder is oblong with a solid base and stands on four ball feet. The top of the holder has an embossed design in the folklore style featuring the Green Man and two birds amidst entwined foliage. There is a blank cartouche in the centre.
The matchbox holder was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1898. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is good with just a small ding in the cartouche and a couple of tiny ones in the sides plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The holder is for a large matchbox and measures 7.5cm / 2.9ins by 5cm / 1.9ins. It stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high and weighs in at a very respectable 50.7g / 1.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the holder, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1898 and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
