George V Silver Vesta Case, H.V. Pithey & Co, 1913
This is a high quality large George V Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is oblong with rounded corners and is decorated with vertical engine turned stripes to front and back with a circular blank cartouche on the front. The interior of the case is gilded and the back is curved to fit comfortably into a pocket.
The vesta case was made in Birmingham for H.V. Pithey & Co and dates to 1913. H.V. Pithey & Co were a London based retail silversmith who commissioned exclusive pieces from manufacturers in Birmingham to sell in their London store. They specialised in smoking accessories, desk items, sewing accessories, photo frames and small items of tableware. The company was active between around 1900 and 1925.
Condition is very good, with just one truly tiny ding above the strike plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of use. The hinge is in good order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case measures 5.5cm / 2.1ins by 4.2cm / 1.6ins and is 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 42.4g / 1.49oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the H.V.P. & Co sponsors' mark for H.V. Pithey & Co.
