Edwardian Silver Vesta Case, Chester, 1903

1 of 6
This is an unusual small Edwardian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The vesta is oblong with chamfered sides giving it a hexagonal profile. The front is engraved with ivy leaves and a blank shield shaped cartouche. The back is engraved with flowers and foliage. The interior of the case is gilded. The size and decoration would suggest that this was intended for use by a Edwardian lady.
The vesta case was made by Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1903. Founded in the 1880s as Payton, Pepper & Co, they became Payton, Pepper & Sons in the mid 1890s. The firm were manufacturing jewellers and silversmiths with premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They produced a wide range of jewellery and small silver items for personal use. The company was very successful and remained in business into the 1990s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vesta case is 4.5cm / 1.7ins by 2.3cm / 0.9ins and 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at 16.1g / 0.57oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are nice and clear to read with just a slight distortion to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter C for 1903 and the P P Ld makers' mark for Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd.
