Victorian Silver Cream Jug, James Deakin, 1897
Here we have a very attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The jug is made in Sheffield by James Deakin & Sons Ltd and dates to 1897. James Deakin established his company at the Matilda Works in Sheffield in 1865, changing the name to James Deakin & Sons when his 3 sons joined him in partnership in around 1886. By the end of the century they had showrooms in London, Glasgow & Belfast. They ceased trading in the mid-1930s, although the name was passed through various owners up until the 1960s.
This is a very nicely decorated cream jug with a band of floral swags around the middle above a part reeded base and a crinkle rim. The handle is elegantly simple with a central rib running down it. It is ideal for use with any tea or coffee service today.
Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents or splits and only the absolute minimum of surface wear. It seems likely that the jug has not seen a great deal of use despite being over 120 years old. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 7cm / 2.75" in diameter, 10.3cm / 4" from lip to handle and stands 5.8cm / 2.4" high to the top of the handle. It weighs a respectable 43.7g / 1.54oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the upper part of the body are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "e" for 1897 and the JD over WD in a shield makers' mark for John Deakin & William Deakin of John Deakin & Sons Ltd.
