Victorian Silver Chamberstick, George Fox, 1862
Here we have an elegant and fine quality Victorian Sterling Silver Chamberstick. The chamberstick has a round domed base with a pierced gallery containing a blank cartouche. The top and bottom rims of the gallery are beaded and it stands on four leaf and bead feet. The fixed candle holder is urn shaped with leaf decoration and a small holder for a snuffer which has sadly been lost over the course of time. The removable sconce has a beaded rim.
The chamberstick was made in London by George Fox and dates to 1862. The Fox family had a long and distinguished history as London silversmiths. The founder of the dynasty was Charles Fox (I) who registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1801. He was succeeded by his son Charles Fox (II), who in turn was followed by his two sons Charles T. Fox and George Fox, with George taking sole control in 1860. George’s son Robert Fox was the final family member who took over in 1910 up until 1921. George’s younger brother Frederick Fox had a separate business with his son Frederick Jr in the 1850s & 1860s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced work and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 160 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The chamberstick is 11cm / 4.3ins from rim to handle, 9cm / 3.5ins in diameter across the base and 5.5cm / 2.1ins high. It weighs in at a very substantial 157.8g / 5.57oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base and repeated on the detachable sconce, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1862, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the G F makers' mark for George Fox.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the chamberstick.
