Victorian Silver Asparagus Tongs, E & J Eaton 1863
Here we have a top quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Asparagus Tongs in the ever popular King's Pattern. The tongs are in the classic design of two broad flat blades with a pierced scrill design, the movable blade having a small lip on the end to make the asparagus spears don't fall out. There is a crest of an armoured arm holding a mace on the curve of the tongs.
The asparagus tongs were made in London by mother and son silversmiths Elizabeth & John Eaton and date to 1863. William Eaton was a specialist spoon maker who registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1813. He produced very high quality flatware up until his death in 1845, at which point his widow Elizabeth took over the running of the business, being joined by their son John in 1858. The firm was finally sold to Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1863.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 160 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
These are well made tongs in a good heavy gauge of silver. They are 26cm / 10.2ins long and 5.3cm / 2.1ins across the blades. They weigh in at a very substantial 214.9g / 7.58oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the insides of the arms up towards the curve, are a little rubbed but still nice and clear to read. On one arm they show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1863 and the Queen Victoria duty mark. On the other is the E.E over J.E for Elizabeth and John Eaton.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the asparagus tongs.
