Victorian Silver & Gilt Salt, Lee & Wigfull, 1883
This is an elegant Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salt with a Gilt interior. The salt is navette shaped with a part-reeded body on a low pedestal stand. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salt is made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Lee & Wigfull and dates to 1883. Originally founded by George Lee, Henry Wigfull became a partner in the 1860s and by 1870 had assumed full ownership. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and remained in business up until the late 1930s.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 7.1cm / 2.8ins long, 4.5cm / 1.8ins across and stands 3.8cm / 1.5ins high. It weighs a respectable 28.9g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the upper part of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter Q for 1883, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the HW makers' mark for Henry Wigfull of Lee & Wigfull.
