2 x Edwardian Silver Toast Racks, Elkington, 1910
Here we have a very fine quality Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Four Slice Toast Racks. These elegant toast racks have a double oval base and trefoil shaped dividers resting on four bracket feet. The finger ring handle is in a complimentary trefoil shape. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast racks were made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and date to 1910. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each toast rack is 8.7cm / 3.4ins by 7.3cm / 2.9ins and stands 12.2cm / 4.8ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very substantial 279.7g / 9.87oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast racks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
