Victorian Dressing Table Pot with Silver Lid, 1900
Here we have a very attractive late Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The cut glass pot is boat or navette shaped with star cut decoration all around the body and a single star cut on the underside of the base. The oval shaped silver lid has a ribbed edge, embossed scrolls and flowers on a textured ground and a central blank cartouche. It is gilded on the inside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pot is made in Birmingham by silversmiths A & J Zimmerman Ltd and dates to 1900. Arthur & John Zimmerman founded the firm in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter in the mid-1880s. They made a huge range of silverware for personal and domestic use of consistently good quality. The firm ceased trading in 1929, a victim like so many others of the Wall Street Crash and subsequent Great Depression.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass pot. The silver lid has no dings or dents but does have a couple of pinholes where the high points of the silver have rubbed through after many years of cleaning. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dressing table pot is 10.2cm / 4ins long, 4.3cm / 1.7ins across and stands 2.6cm / 1in high. The lid by itself weighs a respectable 19.8g / 0.7oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the dressing table pot weighs in at 93.2g / 3.3oz.
The hallmarks, on the side rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the A & J Z in a shield makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
