Pair of Victorian Silver Pillar Candlesticks, 1886
Here we have a handsome Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Pillar Candlesticks. The candlesticks have square bases, weighted for stability, which feature a band of leaf decoration and two beaded rims. The pillar stems are line decorated and the removable circular sconces have beaded rims. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in London by Henry Wilkinson & Co and date to 1886. Henry Wilkinson entered his first mark at the Sheffield assay office in 1831, although the family had been producing Old Sheffield Plate for a number of years prior to that. They made good quality silverware and electroplated items. The firm presented their wares at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and opened a London showroom in 1857. In 1892 the business was bought by Walker & Hall.
Overall condition is very good with just a couple of minor dings to the bases. The top rim of one pillar is a little flattened and there is a small split in the removable sconce but neither of these are really visible when in use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 13.1cm / 5.1ins high and stands on a 7cm / 2.75ins square base. The pair together weigh in at 762.8g / 26.9oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the sides of the bases, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter L for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J B makers' mark for John Brashier, who was head of Henry Wilkinson & Co at this time.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
