Pair Edwardian Silver Salts, Joseph Gloster, 1908
This is a good quality pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Salts with gold washed interiors. The salts are made in Birmingham by Joseph Gloster Ltd and date to 1908. Joseph Gloster started his company at the Lion Silver Works in Birmingham in 1890 producing a wide range of personal and household silver items. The firm was very successful and remained in business up to the late 1970s.
These oval salts well made items in a good gauge of silver. They are beautifully decorated in repousse style with a design of flowers and foliage on a cross hatched background. There are blank cartouches on each side of each salt. The interiors are gold washed. They are perfectly usable on a dining table today for salt or other condiments.
Condition is good with one tiny ding on the base of one salt and another tiny ding on the rim of the other one. Some of the gold wash to the interior has been polished away over the course of time but they still retain a noticeable gold tone on the inside. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The oval salts are each 6.7cm / 2.6" long, 4.5cm / 1.75" wide and 4cm / 1.6" high. The pair together weigh in at 59.1g / 2.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are very clear on one salt and slightly rubbed but still decipherable on the other. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "i" for 1908 and the JG Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
