Maltese Silver Spoon w/ Pinto Silver Coin of 1757

![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
This is a fascinating Maltese Silver Spoon with the bowl created from a silver coin from the reign of Grand Master Emmanuel Pinto de Fonseca dated 1757. Just above the coin is a peacock tail design with a Maltese Cross at its centre. There is then a twisted stem leading to a finial surmounted by a further Maltese Cross.
The island of Malta was under the control of the Knights of St John, also known as the Knights of Malta between 1530 and 1798 and the coin dates from this period.
The spoon is probably of a much later date than the coin itself but there is nothing to specifically date it. The coin is a 15 Tari silver coin from the reign of the 68th Grand Master, Emmanuel Pinto de Fonseca, a Portuguese Knight who was in office from 1741 to his death in 1773 at the age of 91! The coin has the Pinto coat of arms quartered with the white cross of the Knights of St John on one side and a figure of John the Baptist holding a flag on the other side.
The text around the coat of arms is F. Emmanuel Pinto, M.M.H.S.S. 1757. The text around John the Baptist is the motto Non Surrexit Maior and T.XV for 15 Tari. The text on the left side of the coin is somewhat rubbed.
The spoon is 14.2cm / 5.6ins long and weighs a very respectable 26.7g / 0.94oz of solid silver.
