Georgian Silver Gilt Vinaigrette - 1820
A beautifully decorated example of a George III silver vinaigrette in good original condition. The cover is generously decorated with bird, floral and scroll engraving around a vacant oval cartouche. To the back there is a further chased floral and foliate motif within a rectangular scalloped and double framed border. The sides of the box are banded with reeding and gadrooning. The piercing of the grille again depicts stylised scrolling flowers and leaves and is chased. The interior is gilded throughout. The gilding appears to be original and is therefore worn, particularly to the inside of the lid and the bottom of the box. Both hinges are in good order and the box closes well. Easily legible English Sterling hallmarks to the inside - On the lid - Lion (Sterling standard) George III profile (duty mark), and P&T (maker's/sponsor's mark P&T for William Postans & George Tye) - On the bottom - Anchor (Birmingham), W (date letter for 1820, and rubbed maker's mark for Postands & Tye. Dimensions - 3x2.5x1cm.
Excellent conditon consistent with age and use. The observations below are intended for completeness and transparency. There is nothing material that detracts from aesthetics or function. See photos and description. No splits, tear, losses or material deformation. The gilding appears to be original and is worn from use, particularly on the inside of the body of the box and around the very edge of the grille. Further signs of use in minor surface-scratching and slight flattening to the proud areas of gadrooning around the edge. The sponge is not present.
I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. All fine jewellery will be supplied with a box. If the box/case is described in the text, it will be the one photographed, but may not be if it is not mentioned explicitly. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for - feel free to send an enquiry via the site. I have only been able to list a portion of my stock.
I will always mention anything that materially affects the aesthetic or function of a piece, but will not attempt to describe what I consider to be normal for age and use. Please use the photographs as well as you can and I’m always happy to answer specific questions.
