Edwardian Silver Topped Dressing Table Pot, 1901
This is an attractive Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass body is bulbous with a flat star cut base and star and dogtooth cut decoration around the body. The silver lid is embossed with scrolls and gilded on the underside. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The dressing table pot was made in Birmingham by Adie & Lovekin and dates to 1901. Founded in 1863 by James Adie and Alfred Lovekin, the firm specialised in flatware, fancy goods, silver jewellery and particularly sewing related items. Their pin cushions are highly collectable. The original partners passed away in 1913 and 1912 and the firm carried on until around 1930.
Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass. There are some truly tiny dings in the cartouche on the silver lid and one high point where the silver has been polished through. Otherwise there is just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 6.6cm / 2.6ins in diameter and stands 4.7cm / 1.8ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at 10.3g / 0.36oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 121.5g / 4.3oz.
The hallmarks, on the rim of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the A & L Ld makers' mark for Adie & Lovekin Ltd.
