Edwardian Silver Sovereign / Vesta Case, 1902
Here we have a fine quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Combined Sovereign Case and Vesta Case. The case is oblong with rounded corners, one half opening upwards to reveal the sovereign coin holder and the other opening outwards to reveal the match container. The insides of both parts are gilded. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sovereign / vesta case was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Samuel M. Levi and dates to 1902. Founded by Samuel Levi in the 1880s, the firm operated from premises in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter primarily producing silverware for personal use such as cigarette cases, perfume bottles, powder compacts, vesta cases, buckles, photo frames and card cases, although they did also produce some tableware. After Samuel’s death the firm became S.M. Levi Ltd in 1931 and ceased trading at the start of the Second World War.
Condition is good with just a couple of shallow bruises to the outer casing, as you might expect on an item that has spent most of its life in a pocket or handbag. The clasps and hinges are in good working order as is the spring loaded coin holder. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case is 8cm / 3.1ins from the ring to the strike, 2.8cm / 1.1ins across the body and 1.1cm / 0.43ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 34.8g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The full set of hallmarks, on the inside rim of the vesta case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter c for 1902 and the S.M.L makers' mark for Samuel M. Levi. There are other partial sets on the lid of the vesta case, on the inside of the sovereign holder and on the ring, so you can be assured that this is Sterling Silver throughout.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign / vesta case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
