George VI Silver Ice Cream Spoon, Elkington, 1948
This is a good quality George VI Sterling Silver Ice Cream or Sundae Spoon. These spoons have small bowls and long stems to enable them to reach right to the bottom of a knickerbocker glory! This spoon has a barley twist on the lower part of the stem and a double struck thread and bow pattern around the upper part. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The ice cream spoon was made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and dates to 1948. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ice cream spoon is 19.5cm / 7.7ins long and weighs in at a very respectable 42.0g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the bowl, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter Y for 1948 and the distinctive E & Co makers' mark for Elkington & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
