George V Tall Dressing Table Jar, P.W.G., 1920
This is an elegant tall George V Slice Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The tall slender jar has 10 slice cut panels in the clear glass, whilst the sliver lid has a thread and bow design around the central cartouche, which is blank, and is gilded on the inside.
The lid is hallmarked for P.W.G. Silversmiths of London and dated for 1920. There is not a lot of information about P.W.G. but they were active between around 1910 and around 1940 and primarily produced items for the dressing antique tables of wealthy ladies.
The tall pot was probably originally part of a larger set of various shapes and sizes. This particular one may well have been for hatpins, hairpins or other long slender pieces.
Condition is good with just a couple of tiny nibbles on the raised edges of the glass. The silver lid has no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot stands 15.3cm / 6ins high and is 3.5cm / 1.4ins in diameter. The silver lid by itself weighs 9.1g / 0.32oz and all together the pot weighs in at 180.8g / 6.4oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the lid are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter e for 1920 and the PWG makers' mark for P.W.G. Silversmiths.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
