George V Small Silver Inkwell, B'ham, 1913
This is a small George V Sterling Silver Inkwell in the popular Capstan design. The round stepped base has line decoration around the step and the inkwell has a clear glass liner. The base is weighted for stability and has a bakelite cover on the underside to avoid scratching.
The inkwell is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and dates to 1913. Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd founded their business in the 1880s with high end retail premises in the City of London and manufacturing in Birmingham. They produced a wide range of personal and household silverware of consistently good quality and remained in business into the early 1930s.
The inkwell has definitely seen some use and has a few small dings around the body and one in the lid, which doesn't quite sit flush on the base. The glass liner is in good condition and the inkwell remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 6.3cm / 2.5ins in diameter and stands 2.6cm / 1in high. It weighs in at 49.3g / 1.7oz but this does include the filler in the base.
The hallmarks on the base are nice and easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the CS FS either side of a star makers' mark for Cornelius Saunders & Frank Shepherd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
